This hybrid operating room with bi-plane imaging equipment was constructed in the center of Seattle’s only Level 1 Trauma 24/7 hospital. Leveraging the integrated team delivery of progressive design-build, the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center chose Aldrich’s team of high-performance builders, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to work collaboratively to maximize value for the hospital. The team used pull planning to streamline the design process and virtual reality 3D modeling to give the owner a hands-on experience of the OR before it was built.
Constructed in the heart of the perioperative theater in the basement level of the hospital, the project required detailed planning and coordination for utility shutdowns, infection control, logistics, and material procurement. Comprehensive site investigations were conducted to ensure the adequacy of MEP systems, new structural support for the integrated ceiling, and accessibility to the construction area through the 100 feet of restricted surgery zone. Despite these challenges, the progressive design-build delivery method reduced risk; and the state-of-the-art imaging suite and surgery center was completed on time and under budget with zero change orders.
The 2020 DBIA National Awards announced this hybrid biplane operating room as the Small Project of the Year, and it received the National Award of Merit in Healthcare Facilities. We are also pleased to announce, in February of 2021, the ACEC Engineering Awards recognized Notkin, a P2S company for their work on this project with Best in State: Gold Award for Complexity. Harborview Medical Center successfully completed a new Hybrid Bi-Plane Operating Room remodel in the heart of our main surgical department in partnership with Aldrich leading the progressive design-build delivery process. Not only was the project delivered on time and within budget, but the team effort and camaraderie throughout the process was inspirational and has set a new bar for project delivery involving complex teams working in a high-risk environment.
