The Hybrid OR/Cath Lab addition was built at the center of the hospital campus, adjacent to the 24/7 operating theater and over the top of loading docks used for shipping and receiving critical supplies. Tying into two adjacent buildings to construct the cath lab was one of the most significant challenges of the project, made difficult because those two buildings housed critical functions that support Children’s around the clock. Traditional design and construction methods of using exterior structural members around existing columns to anchor the building would have required demolition. This messy, noisy work would have been extremely disruptive to adjoining areas adding potential risk to occupied spaces, counter to the extreme standards put in place by Children’s to protect patient and staff health and safety. Solving this issue was exactly the type of scenario that drove Children’s to select Aldrich for this project.
The Aldrich team have been extremely sensitive to minimizing any impact to operations. Using planning, daily/weekly huddles, and immediate feedback, we have been able to move the project forward while being sensitive to ongoing surgical care delivery. This has been a very good partnership.
